Meet the MRA

History & Advocacy

In 1972, a group of forward-thinking marina operators came together with a shared vision—to unite the marina industry and create a strong, collective voice for its members.

Recognizing that other marine businesses also needed this vital advocacy, their vision expanded into the Marine Recreation Association (MRA): a nonprofit committed to protecting and promoting the entire marine recreation industry.

Today, the MRA represents marinas, boatyards, and allied businesses across the Western U.S. and around the world. We work closely with government officials to ensure that California’s environmental regulations are fair, practical, and balanced—protecting natural resources without placing undue burdens on the industry.

Why focus on California?

There’s a common saying: “As goes California, so goes the nation”—and often, the world. The Golden State’s groundbreaking environmental policies are often adopted by other states and even countries.

We’ve positioned our organization at the epicenter of environmental policy creation, where our influence can have a ripple effect, benefitting our members at home and abroad.

In addition to monitoring legislation and lobbying state lawmakers year-round, we host the annual California Boating Congress (CBC) in Sacramento. Since 2016, the CBC has given members and boaters the opportunity to meet with state leaders and policymakers to impact the future of marine recreation.

Networking

Through a series of networking events, we give members the opportunity to build long-term relationships with fellow business owners, managers, and team members. We often hear that these connections play a crucial role in helping businesses overcome operational issues, industry challenges, and regulatory hurdles.

Advertising

The MRA uses multiple channels to reach environmentally conscious boaters searching for ethical businesses. Being a member demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and responsible practices, building trust and attracting conscientious customers.

Education & Training

The MRA’s Educational Conference and Trade Show is our flagship annual event, with educational seminars, networking opportunities, and a trade show featuring top product and service providers. Its greatest value comes from the exchange of insights among marine professionals, making it a must-attend event!

Business & Compliance Tools

The MRA equips members with essential business and legal tools to streamline operations and stay compliant. These resources help simplify business management, allowing for more time to enjoy life beyond work.

The Marine Recreation Association is dedicated to supporting the businesses and natural resources that keep marine recreation alive and thriving.

From advocacy and networking to education and legal tools, joining the MRA is a step toward a stronger, healthier industry where collaboration drives success!

Resources for Boaters

The MRA helps boaters too—connecting them with sustainable businesses, providing opportunities to meet face-to-face with legislators, and delivering timely updates on regulatory changes that impact the industry and waterways essential to boating.
